It only makes sense that the little organelles behind every single biological function we have, ARE ALSO critically important for doing biologically nothing. Well, at least based off our recollection.

Because our nightly unconscious time (aka sleep) is anything but non-eventful . It’s the critical period where the body is finally able to go into a deep rebuild, regenerate and detoxifying state, one which is so essential to our wellbeing that it is a non-negotiable and has been for all living multi-cellular organisms for millions of years.

And you need go no further than pulling an all nighter (or two) to realize exactly why. You’re simply not YOU when you don’t sleep, and that’s because a lack of it messes with the very foundation of your biology. Allowing dysfunction to spread like a wild fire, with your competence in basically everything quickly burning down with it. Which is one of the reasons high quality sleep has become a hallmark recommendation for high quality mitochondria.

However, it’s beginning to look like this relationship isn’t a one way street. As new data is suggesting that Mitochondria are not only impacted by poor sleep, but they may just regulate our sleepiness signal itself. Somehow making these little organelles even MORE important than we already knew they were!
