When we explore the very nuanced topic of “Eating for Longevity”, the science and narrative often focus on “restriction and lifespan”. Two components of, but as we’ve learned, definitely NOT the sole variables, when it comes to extending our healthy years.

Much of these conclusions track back to animal models – all we currently have when assessing lifespan – which typically display that a chronic calorie restriction extends maximum lifespan in smaller mammals like mice. With several intermittent fasting strategies having similar, yet often less significant effects.

Findings that could have been enough to close this investigation, if of-course, there wasn’t another major component of Longevity to consider, Healthspan. Or the truly healthy years of an organisms life. A component which modern science is finding, may be negatively impacted by chronic calorie restriction and more extreme fasting protocols. Which, begs the question…

Is there an optimal strategy that can bring to light the best of both worlds? Long story short… Maybe!
